Wisconsin International University College, Ghana (WIUC Ghana) is celebrating a remarkable academic achievement after Ms Elizabeth Abbey, Lecturer in Psychology and Head of the University’s Career & Counselling Unit, won the Best Poster Award at the 28th International Congress of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP).
Held in Leuven, Belgium, in July 2026, the congress brought together researchers, scholars, and practitioners from universities and institutions around the world. With more than 130 scientific sessions and over 500 accepted research abstracts, the event provided a highly competitive platform for presenting new knowledge and ideas in cross-cultural psychology.
Award-Winning Research on African Adolescent Development
Ms Abbey received the award for her poster presentation titled:
“Towards an African Cultural Psychological Perspective of Adolescent Development: Reclaiming Indigenous Pathways to Identity, Mental Well-being, and Positive Youth Development in Africa.”
Her research explores how Africa’s cultural traditions and indigenous knowledge systems can deepen our understanding of adolescent development. It highlights the important roles that African values, family structures, community practices and cultural knowledge play in shaping young people’s identities, emotional well-being, resilience and positive development.
Rather than relying exclusively on Western theories, the study advocates for approaches that reflect the lived experiences and cultural realities of young people across Africa.
Advancing African Psychology
The research makes an important contribution to the growing field of African psychology by promoting culturally relevant approaches to adolescent mental health and development.
It encourages scholars, practitioners and policymakers to recognise indigenous knowledge systems as valuable sources of insight. At the same time, it enriches global discussions in cross-cultural psychology and developmental science by bringing African perspectives to the forefront.
