Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a nonprofit dedicated to discovering what works to help the world’s poor. We design and evaluate programs in real contexts with real people, and provide hands-on assistance to bring successful programs to scale. IPA is accepting interns for the spring of 2014 globally. These positions offer an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research.
Interns perform a variety of tasks, including:

• Provide monitoring and oversight for project implementation;
• Assist with developing and piloting survey questionnaires and other measurement tools;
• Coordinate field data collection efforts;
• Conduct administrative data collection;
• Develop data quality and content quality protocols;
• Write reports to donors;
• Coordinate with partner organizations;
• Assist with data cleaning and analysis;
• Update and draft policy briefs and memos;
• Organize conferences;
• Office administration;
• Database management; and
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Currently studying (Undergraduate or graduate students in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields)
• Coursework in development economics and research methods, advanced knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred), knowledge of zTree (programming software for computerized experiments) is s plus or experience with data management required for research related positions;
• Prior work experience (i.e. field research) or volunteer experience in a developing country is a plus
• Familiarity with randomized controlled trials
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and to manage multiple tasks efficiently as a team player
• A passion for Behavioral Economics
• Interest in living and working in Abroad
• Strong oral and written communications skills;
• The candidate should also be a self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.

Additional qualifications for field-based internships:

• Developing country experience, cultural sensitivity, and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies; and
• Strong oral and written communications skills: proficiency in English and depending on the country, proficiency in the local language may be required.

Intern, Making Ghana Girls Great (Ghana)
The MGcubed project is looking for an intern to work on a newly launched distance learning project. In this position you would gain broad exposure to field research and project management working alongside Ghanaian and international staff. Specific responsibilities will depend on the intern’s interest and capability, but will likely include data analysis, report writing and project planning. The position is based in Accra. If you are good writer, have strong quantitative skills and at least 1-2 years of work experience.

Intern, Commercial Agriculture Project Ghana)
The Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP) aims to increase agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods via increased access to land, private sector finance, and input- and output-markets by smallholder farms and others engaged in commercial agriculture in the Accra Plains and Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) zone. The GCAP project will need an intern with good data management and programming skills in Stata to help with the management of high frequency data.

Intern, Field Office (Ghana)
IPA Ghana is looking for two interns to support the country office. In this position you will gain exposure to various projects in the agriculture, health, education and micro-finance sectors. In addition, you will work closely with the IPA Ghana management team. Your specific responsibilities will depend on your interest and capability, but will likely include developing systems for cross-project information management, planning and data analysis. The positions are based in Tamale and Accra, and may involve travel to project sites across Ghana. IPA Ghana is seeking an intern for a health behavior change project based out of the Tamale office. The intern will support implementation monitoring of the community-based component, and work with the project team to develop content for a new mobile phone intervention. Strong candidates will have 1-2 years of work experience, and Masters level applicants are preferred. Skills in health research, behavior change communications, management of field work, or quantitative data collection will be a plus.

Intern, Disseminating Innovative Resources and Technologies for Smallholder farmers (Ghana)
DIRTS is seeking a Fall intern to work on their weather indexed insurance intervention. Responsibilities include overseeing notification of outcome for the 2013 agricultural season, and developing marketing scripts, protocols, and materials for the 2014 season. The intern will be involved in recruitment, training, and monitoring of field staff, using rainfall data and insurance contracts to determine payout, producing field protocols and marketing scripts, notification scripts, and training materials. Desired qualifications include undergraduate studies in development economics or related field, proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (particularly Microsoft Excel and mail merging), management of field staff, and experience in a developing country.

DIRTS is seeking a Fall intern to work on their baseline survey of sample households between November 2014 and February 2014. The intern will be involved in piloting an electronic survey in non-sample communities, and assisting in the launch and management of baseline survey. Desired qualifications include experience in the collection and management of survey data, familiarity with electronic survey software (particularly Blaise), comfort with Stata and management of large datasets, and experience working in a developing country.

Intern, Busara Center for Behavioral Economics (Kenya)
IPA‘s Nairobi office is looking to hire an intern for the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics. It is the first Center for Behavioral Economics in a developing country, where decision-making experiments are carried out with participants from informal settlements. The intern is expected to leave this internship with meaningful experience running lab sessions, programming experiments, working with participants and local staff.
The position offers an opportunityto gain first-hand field management experiencein an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. The principal investigators are Johannes Haushofer and Chaning Jang, however you will be working closely with all researchers who conduct studies at the lab. Intern, Urban Sanitation (Senegal)
IPA Senegal is looking to hire two interns, based in either Washington, DC, or Dakar, Senegal, to support the Urban Sanitation project during the spring 2014 semester.
The Urban Sanitation Intern will work closely with the Research Manager, Project Coordinator, and Data Manager to support a field project focused on increasing access to improved sanitation services for poor households in peri-urban Dakar. This position offers the opportunity to work on a large, complex field research project while honing skills in data management and programming. The intern should expect to commit 10-20 hours per week to this position.
Duties may include:

• quality checks and organization of incoming data;
• creating visual representations of data;
• assisting with preparation of financial and analytical reports for partners and donors

Intern, Framing Cash Grants (Kampala, Uganda)
IPA Uganda is looking to hire one intern starting in early- to mid- March to help support The Framing Cash Grants project, a study testing different types of unconditional cash transfer disbursement to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. The intern will be involved in oversight of the midline data collection and implementation of the intervention in the Soroti and Serere districts, with a heavy focus on data management and cleaning. The intern may also participate in subsequent data cleaning and analysis. The internship will primarily be based in Soroti town, with occasional travel to Kampala and Serere.

Intern, Community Connector Project (Uganda)
IPA Uganda is looking for an intern to provide support for a health education and women’s empowerment project in South-West Uganda. The intern will work closely with the Project Coordinator and Field manager during the final data collection phase of this project. The intern will assist with a range of tasks involved in the management and coordination of a large team of local staff, logistical support and data cleaning. Strong candidates will have strong research skills, extensive experience working with STATA, excellent organizational skills and be willing to work in a rural setting.
