SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES ORGANIZE A SEMINAR ON POLITICAL COMMUNICATION IN THE COVID-19 ERA

The School of Communication Studies WIUC-GH organized a seminar dubbed “Political communication in the covid-19 era: Strategies and Innovation for elections 2020”. 

Speakers at the event were Hon. Yaw Buaben Asamoa Director of Communications NPP, Mr. Obuobi Aryetey Ayawaso West Campaign Officer, Mrs. Juliet Amoah Executive Director Pensplusbyte and Dr. Este Sikanku Communication Strategist, Lecturer GIJ.

Issues interrogated by the panel were what political communication meant and strategies adapted especially by the political parties to communicate effectively to their supporters amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hon. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah of the NPP in his submission mentioned that his political party had taken advantage of the various online technologies as it has been helpful in reaching more people as well as segregating the audiences.

The Representative of the NDC Mr. Obuobi Aryetey said that they as a party already have implored various online channels to reach their audiences, however he mentioned that it came with its own challenges such as network challenges in the hinterlands of the country, as well as the cost barrier in terms of purchasing data to access content from political parties.

The Executive Director of Penplusbyte Mrs. Juliet Amoah also advised political parties to use more online technologies if they wanted to reach young people especially between the ages of 18-25 as they spend more time on social media. 

Participants, mostly students were given the opportunity to ask questions as well as have interactions with the speakers.
