Wisconsin Nursing Student Blaise Ackom Impresses at an International Medical Conference in the USA.

Blaise Ackom, a Level 300 student of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, has made the university proud on the global stage with a remarkable presentation at the 2025 Physicians and Surgeons Conference held in Atlanta, USA.

The prestigious annual conference, held from May 16 to May 18 at the Wyndham Buckhead Conference Centre, brought together a distinguished gathering of Ghanaian and American physicians, surgeons, and healthcare specialists. Organised as a platform for dialogue among Ghanaian medical professionals in the diaspora, the event focuses on critical medical issues. It promotes the sharing of new research and innovations in healthcare delivery.

Blaise was the only student nurse from Ghana selected to present at the conference, delivering an abstract on “Cervical Cancer and HIV Co-Infection”—a topic of growing concern among women in Ghana living with HIV. He had the unique honour of opening the conference on May 16 with his presentation, which drew admiration from many in attendance for its depth, clarity, and clinical relevance.

Notable attendees included Dr. Siriboe, President of the Ghana Medical Association; CEOs of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Sunyani Regional Hospital, and International Maritime Hospital; and the former CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Blaise is an active member of the Cancer Support Foundation Ghana, a non-profit organisation founded by a U.S.-based medical oncologist and haematologist. Reflecting on the experience, he shared saying “This was my first time travelling internationally, and it was truly transformative. Doctors were amazed that I’m still a student. The experience has opened new doors and inspired me to do even greater work in healthcare across Africa.”

His participation and success underscore Wisconsin’s strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and its mission to produce globally competitive healthcare professionals. Blaise’s achievement serves as an inspiration to his peers and a proud moment for the entire university community.
