Level 300 BSc Midwifery student of Wisconsin International University College, Ghana
(WIUC-GH), Mercy Naa-Oyoo Quartey has been adjudged the Tertiary Student Nurse of the
year at the Ghana Tertiary Awards, 2021.
The Tertiary Students Awards is an initiative of Smivic Communications Limited, an Event
and a Marketing agency based in Accra.
Co-founder, Smivic Communication, Ebenezer Smith Baidoo said the program aims to
support students to identify and appreciate their talents while partnering with them to use
their talent to help their communities. He said the winner was awarded a plaque, medal and a
citation and hopes for sponsorship for subsequent events so as to award winners some cash
prizes as well.
According to Ebenezer Smith, the winner of the Student Nurse Category is expected to lead
social media engagements on exclusive breastfeeding for the next few months while also
actively partnering with the agency in future projects in her field of practice/study.
Mercy Naa-Oyoo after receiving the award, expressing tremendous happiness was grateful to
WIUC-GH, for giving her the needed tutorship that made her qualify for such an award.
The criteria for declaring a winner is based on three exercises: Vetting, Voting, and Profile of
the candidates carrying 30, 40, and 30 percent respectively.
In all, there were 205 nominations in 22 categories.
Profile of Mercy Naa-Oyoo Quartey
Mercy is a certificate holder in General nursing with 8 years of working experience, but will soon
graduate with a BSc in Midwifery.
Her call to study midwifery was inspired by the rewarding role, midwifery, that will enable
her to directly impact the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies.
Her philosophy in life is “to be good to people, always do her best, and refuse to let fear
guide her decision-making process.”
She gets her inspiration from Michele Ruiz, California born entrepreneur and a former Los
Angeles news anchor.
“If people are doubting how you can go, go so far that you can not hear them anymore,”
