BACKGROUND INFORMATION/AIM

The Master of Science (MSc) Nursing programme is a postgraduate programme designed to develop advanced clinical, educational, leadership, and research competencies among professional nurses. The programme aims to prepare highly skilled nursing professionals who will contribute effectively to quality healthcare delivery, nursing education, leadership, and administration in Ghana and globally.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Wisconsin International University College, Ghana (WIUC-GH) recognizes nursing as a dynamic science that requires continuous professional development to respond to evolving healthcare needs, technologies, and evidence-based practices. The programme therefore emphasizes the integration of theory, practice, research, and innovation in nursing.

The MSc Nursing programme aligns with the vision of WIUC-GH to provide high-quality university education and to produce graduates who can offer their services both locally and internationally, thereby contributing significantly to national and global health systems.

 

Objectives

On successful completion of the MSc Nursing programme, graduates should be able to:

  • Apply advanced nursing knowledge and evidence-based practices to improve patient care outcomes;

  • Utilize research findings to inform clinical practice, nursing education, and health service delivery;

  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills in healthcare and nursing practice settings;

  • Apply principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and patient-centered care across diverse populations;

  • Utilize educational and clinical technologies to enhance nursing practice and professional development;

  • Demonstrate ethical decision-making and professional accountability in nursing practice;

  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to improve health outcomes.

 

Entry Requirements

The minimum academic qualification required to be eligible for admission into the MSc Nursing programme is at least a second class lower division in a bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Midwifery from an accredited institution. Applicants with a third class degree may be considered, subject to additional requirements determined by the university.

Additional requirements include:

  • Applicants must be registered nurses or midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

  • Applicants should have a minimum of two years post-qualification clinical experience after obtaining the bachelor’s degree.

  • Applicants must be medically fit.

  • All applicants must pass a selection interview with a minimum pass mark of 50%.

  • A completed Wisconsin International University College postgraduate application form;

  • Official transcripts and certificates of the applicant’s previous academic records at the university level;

  • A full curriculum vitae (CV).

 

Duration/Sessions

The duration of the MSc Nursing programme is one academic year

The MSc Nursing programme is designed for registered nurses and midwives seeking advanced professional development in clinical practice, education, leadership, and administration. Graduates of the programme may be employed in the following sectors:

  • Nursing and Midwifery training institutions, including universities and colleges (public and private);

  • Public and private hospitals and healthcare facilities;

  • National and international health organizations (e.g., Ghana Health Service, teaching hospitals, United Nations agencies);

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs);

  • Health-related research and policy institutions.
