Wisconsin international Collaborates With ICESDA to Advance ESG Integration For Africa’s Sustainable Future

The International Conference on Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development of Africa (ICESDA) concluded in Accra, Ghana. It brought together a dynamic mix of academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to chart a unified path toward Africa’s sustainable future. Wisconsin University proudly participated in this transformative conference through its Department of Development and Environmental Studies, reinforcing its commitment to practical, solution-driven approaches to sustainable development and ESG integration.

Hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), the conference provided a high-level platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing on the pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges facing Africa today. Topics ranged from climate variability and renewable energy adoption to food security, corporate governance, and the transition toward green and resilient business models.

At the conference, representatives from Wisconsin University’s Department of Development and Environmental Studies, led by its Head of Department, Mr Sosthenes Kufogbe, engaged actively in panel discussions and chairing sessions, sharing insights from its practical-oriented programs and research initiatives that align with ESG principles. The university showcased its work in promoting innovative strategies for sustainable development, emphasising the importance of integrating ESG considerations into education, industry practices, and public policy frameworks.

A standout session featured Mrs Nana Yaa, who passionately called for increased male support in achieving gender equality, highlighting the crucial link between empowering women and attaining resilient, sustainable development. Her remarks resonated with Wisconsin University’s own commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and equitable growth, which remain central to the university’s teaching, research, and community engagement initiatives.

Speakers and panellists at the conference including renowned sanitation ambassadors Buzstop Boys emphasized that collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers is essential for Africa to realize its sustainable development goals. The consensus underscored that ESG integration is not just an option but a necessity for ensuring that Africa’s development is both resilient and inclusive. Wisconsin University’s participation reinforced the university’s role as a key partner in driving these efforts, contributing both expertise and innovative solutions toward building a greener, more sustainable continent.

The ICESDA conference concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to embed ESG principles at the core of future development strategies across Africa, ensuring that sustainability, equity, and resilience are central to every initiative.
