Wisconsin International University College, Ghana has counselled over 400 students of the Amasaman Senior Technical School located at Amasaman as part of its Inter-Senior High School Education and Career and Guide Seminar.
The Seminar Series which is part of the university’s corporate social responsibility and community engagement initiative is projected to engage 10,000 students from selected Senior High Schools across the country in counselling, career guidance and mentoring sessions.
The series, under the theme, ‘Connect to The Future: Finding the True ‘Me’ is aimed at helping second cycle students make the right choices in terms of course and career offerings at the universities/ tertiary education levels.
The event which focused on identifying personal interests, developing values and safe social lives brought together resource persons from diverse fields and expertise including lecturers and administrative staff from WIUC-Ghana.
Deputy Registrar at WIUC-Ghana, Mr Joel Idun-Acquah stressed the need for students to appreciate and make the best of the opportunities offered them through the free SHS adding that education widens a person’s chances of succeeding in life while helping to develop their judgement, evaluation and problem-solving abilities which are essentials skills to navigate life.
Dr Siraj Mohammed, Head of I.T Support, WIUC-Ghana and a Cyber Security Expert advised students against comparing themselves to privileged students from other schools presumed to be better than them. “Don’t let anyone discourage you that you are in a bad school. If you study hard you will make it far”, he said.
Other speakers included the Career and Counseling Assistant at Wisconsin, Miss. Roselyn Amoah
and an instructor at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Mr Maxwel Eshun also encouraged students, who have to combine helping their parents at work and schooling to not relent but to have the tenacity and focus to make themselves and their families proud in the future assuring them that they can all become whatever they desire to become in the future, no matter their current situation.
The event is an initiative of the Public Affairs Unit of the university with support from other departments.
