A warm Wisconsin welcome was extended to 1,066 new students at the University’s 13th Matriculation Ceremony. The students, who come from 14 countries, joined the University during the 2015/2016 academic year.  Among them were Wisconsin’s first-ever matriculants on the BA Communication Studies, BA Rural Development and Ecotourism and BSc Economics programmes.

Welcoming them as junior members of the University community, the Vice Chancellor, Professor K. Oduro-Afriyie, encouraged students to take advantage of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to develop themselves as well-rounded individuals.

Prof Oduro-Afriyie said: “In the words of Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu: ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’.

“You have taken that first step today towards attaining higher education. Wisconsin will be there to support you throughout your journey until the day you mount the podium to receive your graduation certificate.”

Guest speaker Dr Nana Kofi Annan, a Wisconsin alumnus, charged the matriculants to take advantage of technology to enhance their learning so they could leave university fully prepared for a highly digitised world.

The ‘Wizzy Choir’ and the Nigerian Students Association cultural troupe were on hand to provide entertainment during the ceremony.
