Eight of Wisconsin’s top Chinese language students have received awards from the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Sun Baohong. The Ambassador said she had visited Wisconsin to present the awards in person so that she could interact with the award-winning students.

The awards, now in their fourth year, went to students who had excelled in the Chinese language course offered at Wisconsin International University College.

This is the second time the Chinese Ambassador has visited personally to present the awards.

Speaking at the awards ceremony in the Conference Room of Wisconsin’s Main Campus, H.E. Sun Baohong said: “When we met last year, I promised I would come back as I know that students of this university take learning (of the) Chinese language very seriously.

“I want to congratulate these students on their world vision, consciousness of seizing opportunities as well as hardworking spirit.

She added: “The promotion of (the) grand undertaking of China-Africa traditional friendship relies on people who know China and Africa very well. Studying Chinese is imperative. I encourage students present today to overcome difficulties and keep studying Chinese in an earnest manner.”

The Ambassador praised Wisconsin’s Chinese language teacher Mr Liu Guanqun for his dedication to teaching the language while working with limited resources.

Ambassador Baohong presented a box of books and materials to assist students with the learning process.

Future plans

On future plans, Ms Baohong said China plans to offer exchange opportunities through which teachers and lecturers would benefit in Science and Mathematics, which the Chinese traditionally excel in.

Wisconsin’s Vice Chancellor Professor Kofi Oduro-Afriyie thanked the Chinese Ambassador for her government’s continued support to the institution and Ghana through the awards scheme.

He added that the university would continue to offer the Chinese language course, with a view to offering Chinese at diploma and degree level.

Prof Oduro-Afriyie charged the award winners to keep polishing up on their Chinese so as not to lose their mastery of the language.
